Family Day makes a 4-day holiday weekend
Koror, Palau (TIA BELAU) -- The upcoming Thanksgiving holiday will start a 4-day holiday weekend to mark the start of the holiday season. This follows President Tommy E. Remengesau Jr., signing into law a new holiday called Family Day to be observed every fourth Friday of November.
As a new law, RPPL No. 10-15, established a national legal holiday to honor families to be held on the fourth Friday of November each year. Thanksgiving Day is observed every fourth Thursday of November, making two different holidays on consecutive days.
President Remengesau in his signing statement said that designating the fourth Friday of November as a Family Day has an important significance.
“It will automatically allow for a 4-day weekend as it will be followed by Thanksgiving Day, which is on the fourth Thursday of November. This will be the only week in the year that every citizen may find the opportunity for a full 4 days weekend,” Remengesau said.
President Remengesau also said in a press conference that Fridays after the Thanksgiving Day are historically low productivity days sandwiched between a holiday and the weekend.
The president added that it is even more significant because this year has been declared as the Year of Family.
