Koror, Palau- President Tommy Remengesau Jr. met with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday night in Davao , Philippines, with both presidents looking forward to an “exchange of formal visits.

”In a statement provided to the media, Philippine Presidential Spokeman Harry Roque said President Duterte met with Remengesau and “both sides reaffirmed the importance of the friendship between the Philippines and Palau, citing cultural ties, similar histories and shared challenge.
”Both presidents in that meeting gave instructions to their respective senior officials to move forward discussions on education, maritime security and delimitation, agriculture and aquaculture, counternarcotics, connectivity, medical tourism and trade and investments.“
The President has a very warm and engaging meeting with Palau President Tommy Remesengau,” Roque said in a statement.
Both presidents acknowledged the cultural ties, similar histories and shared challenges of the Philippines and Palau.The meeting lasted for more than hour held at the Presidential Guest House in Davao City.
Davao City, located in Mindanao is Duterte’s hometown where he served as Mayor before he was elected to the presidency.
In a press release by the Philippines Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) , President Remengesau expressed his gratitude to the Filipinos for having been “very instrumental” in the economic development of Palau.
Filipinos in Palau make up about 60 percent of the workforce, working in hotels, restaurants, construction and the hospital.
Remengesau is also planning to to reopen consulate and embassy in Palau and the Philippines and to add more direct flights between the two nations to further improve connectivity and boost tourism cooperation.
Remengesau was accompanied by Governor of Ngiwal State Ellender Ngirameketii, Governor of Airai State Tmewang Rengulbai, Chief of Staff Secilil Eldebechel and Oscar TJ Remengesau.
Palau President Remengesau on Wednesday announced that he was meeting with Duterte to start discussions on issues of mutual interests.
